Building an Anti-Racist Business

Inclusive Leadership

Imagine this: It’s 2 AM. I’ve had a couple of drinks, and suddenly, I am very passionate about your business. Listen, bestie—your business? It needs to be more inclusive and less racist. And I’m gonna tell you why.
Listen. I love you, but we need to talk. Because I know you care about people. I know you want your business to be a force for good. But if you’re not actively working to make it anti-racist, decolonized, and inclusive, there’s a good chance you’re unintentionally leaving people out.
And I cannot, in good conscience, let that happen while I sit here sipping my overpriced cocktail.
Jokes aside, this is literally what I do for a living. I help solopreneurs and small business owners like you make sure their businesses aren’t accidentally reinforcing harmful systems.
Because let’s be real—just wanting to be inclusive isn’t enough. You have to be intentional about it.
That means:
✔️ Hiring beyond just “culture fit” (which is often code for “people who look like me”).
✔️ Paying people equitably and fairly (yes, even your contractors and part-time staff, all labor is skilled).
✔️ Marketing in a way that actually includes diverse voices, not just during Black History Month.
✔️ Making sure your products, services, and policies are actively evolving to include all people.
Look, I know no one wakes up and says, “I think I’ll be exclusionary today.” But good intentions don’t always translate into good practices. Here are some ways businesses think they’re being inclusive but… aren’t:
❌ “We hire based on culture fit!” → Translation: You only hire people who feel comfortable to you, which usually means people with similar backgrounds. Try “culture add” instead—people who bring new perspectives and experiences.
❌ “Everyone is welcome here!” → But are they really? Do your policies, pricing, and messaging actually reflect that? Or do people from marginalized communities have to work harder to fit in?
❌ “We support diversity!” → Cool, but are you showing it in who you hire, who you collaborate with, and who you pay (and how much)?
It’s okay if some of this stings a little. Growth isn’t always comfortable. But you’re here, which means you want to do better, and that’s what matters.
First, breathe. If any of this is hitting home, you’re not alone, and you’re not a bad person. The point isn’t to feel guilty—it’s to take action.
Here’s where to start:
1️⃣ Educate yourself. No, not by DMing the nearest Indigenous, disabled, or trans person and asking for free labor. Read, listen, learn—there’s no shortage of resources out there. And if you do want to learn from people who hold marginalized identities—PAY US!
2️⃣ Audit your business. Who are you hiring? Who are you centering in your marketing? Are you actually making space for diverse perspectives? If you don’t know where to start, download my freebie to get you started.
3️⃣ Get support. This is literally what I do—helping business owners build truly inclusive, anti-racist businesses that reflect their values. (And yes, I can help you too.)
Because honestly? You’re too smart and too awesome to be running a business that’s accidentally exclusive. Let’s make sure your business isn’t just talking the talk—but actually walking the walk.

(Okay, it’s technically not 2 AM right now, but if it were, this is exactly what I’d tell you. Now go forth and fix your business—preferably before my next drink. 🥂)
